  1. Barbie, Klaus 1913- . German Nazi, a member
  2. of the SS from 1936. During World War II he
  3. was involved in the deportation of Jews from
  4. the occupied Netherlands 1940-42 and in
  5. tracking down Jews and Resistance workers in
  6. France 1942-45. Having escaped capture in
  7. 1945, Barbie was employed by the US
  8. intelligence services in Germany before
  9. moving to Bolivia in 1951 where he made a
  10. living as a businessman accompanied by his
  11. family. Expelled from there in 1983, he was
  12. arrested and convicted of crimes against
  13. humanity in France 1987. His work as SS
  14. commander, based in Lyon, included the
  15. rounding-up of Jewish children from an
  16. orphanage at Izieu and the torture of the
  17. Resistance leader Jean Moulin. During this
  18. time, his ruthlessness earned him the epithet
  19. `Butcher of Lyon'.
